4WD & RECOVERY

EQUIPMENT

To drive on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), you will need a 4-Wheel Drive vehicle in good condition. Most roads on K’gari are sand tracks which are rough and remote. It can be very costly to repair or retrieve your vehicle.

Carry a snatch strap in your car, in case you get bogged or to help another bogged vehicle. You might need to pull them out to continue on your way.

Essential

Snatch strap (tow rope)
D shackle
Spade
Tyre gauge
Tyre deflator
Spare tyre & jack
Water & packaged food to keep in the car (e.g muesli bars, canned tuna)

Recommended

Get your car serviced before your trip as there are no mechanics on the island
A small tool kit
First aid kit
Gaffer tape and zip ties
Portable air compressor
Jumper cables
Recovery boards, especially if you are traveling solo
