PLANNING YOUR

K'GARI JOURNEY

We want you to have the time of your life on K’gari (Fraser Island), so there are a few things you need to do prior to your arrival at K’gari Beach Houses. Remember, K’gari is a sand island, the biggest in the world, and there are no bitumen roads on the eastern side of the island. You will need a four-wheel drive vehicle when you come and stay with us. Don’t worry, four-wheel driving is a lot of fun and we are here to help you. Below are our suggestions for planning your trip.

When travelling to K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) by 4WD you will need to:

Make sure your 4WD is in good condition and have essential recovery equipment should you become bogged in soft sand.
Purchase a Vehicle Access Permit from Queensland Parks and Forests.
Organise a barge ticket. We recommend using Manta Ray Barges if you are traveling to K’gari from the south. If you are traveling from the north or west of Hervey Bay, we recommend using Sealink Barges.
Check the tide timetable to safely access Seventy-five Mile Beach, if you are accessing the island from the south (Inskip Point, Rainbow Beach).
GPS, Google maps or Maps (Apple) are not reliable on the island. Please see our website for directions via Rainbow Beach or directions via Hervey Bay.
We recommend using a HEMA map when exploring the island. These can be purchased on arrival at reception.
Check for Park Alerts for any closed areas or road and weather warnings affecting driving conditions before leaving for K’gari.
